“Girls in ICT” is a global movement started by ITU in 2011. Since 2011, more than 362 000 girls and young women have taken part in more than 11 000 celebrations in 171 countries worldwide.

The movement is the direct result of the adoption of Resolution 70 by ITU’s Plenipotentiary Conference in Guadalajara, Mexico, in October 2010. The Resolution, “Gender mainstreaming in ITU and promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women through information and communication technologies”, resolved to incorporate a gender perspective in the implementation of all ITU programs and plans. The International Day of Girls in ICT is celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday in April. This year, the day is on 28 April 2022. This year’s theme is “Access and Safety”. The main event of “Girls in ICT” took place in different places in 2011. For instance, the main events were conducted in Geneva, Switzerland (2011), New York, United States (2012), Brussel, Belgium (2013), Geneva, Switzerland (2014-2017), Sofia, Bulgaria (2018), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2019), and virtually conducted in 2020. At the same time, local events were also launched to celebrate the international day by ITU members around the world.
