Background
International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated worldwide every year on the fourth Thursday of April, with the date being 27 April 2023 for this year. This day offers girls and young women an opportunity to understand and experience the benefits of ICT in shaping their careers and aspirations. To date, over 377,000 girls and young women have participated in more than 11,400 celebrations of International Girls in ICT Day across 171 countries.
The Girls in ICT initiative strives to enhance the digital skills and presence of young women and girls, aged 12-24, in the STEM fields, particularly ICTs. Given the success of this initiative annually, the ITU is committed to promoting Girls in ICT not just on this specific day, but throughout the year. The year 2023 marks the beginning of a new approach, introducing year-long activities for Girls in ICT.
For 2023, the theme for Girls in ICT activities is “Digital Skills for Life!”. As per ITU’s recent data, 57% of women globally use the internet, compared to 62% of men. When women lack internet access or feel unsafe online, it hinders their ability to develop digital skills and engage in digital environments. This limitation also affects their opportunities to build careers in STEM fields.
In Indonesia, the objective of the Girls in ICT Day is to motivate girls and young women to study STEM subjects, boost their digital proficiency, and promote the meaningful and safe use of ICT.
The celebration is organized by the Ministry of Communications and Informatics Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The Girls in ICT Indonesia will take place under the theme “Digital Skills and Literacy for Life!” on 30 October 2023 at the Mandarin Oriental in Jakarta, Indonesia.
