The workshop will provide an overview of what IDNs are, and how they contribute toward a more digitally inclusive and meaningful Internet experience, especially for billions of users who do not speak English. In addition, the workshop will provide an opportunity for the participants to experience using IDNs. UA is a technical requirement that ensures all domain names and email addresses are treated equally and can be used by all Internet-enabled applications, devices, and systems.
Learn more about the DNS
The Domain Name System (DNS) has expanded significantly since 2009, with more than 1,200 active generic top-level domains (gTLDs), including IDNs, and with more than 60 IDN country code top-level domains (ccTLDs). These TLDs may be longer than three characters and may use characters beyond those used to write English. Many systems don’t recognize or appropriately process these domain names, and not all online portals are primed for the opening of a user account with email addresses in local languages and script. Organizations that are UA-ready therefore enjoy a host of benefits, including improved digital inclusivity, increased business opportunities, and greater social relevance in a multilingual world.
